\\ Nubya Garcia and Wayne Francis join artists from India, Brazil and Faroe Islands in London this week
In a celebration of cross-cultural collaboration, Brainchild and Roundhouse are joining forces to present On Mass; a combination of beatbox, singing and bold sounds. International music meets local scenes; this Thursday at London’s Total Refreshment Centre—a favourite for innovative Jazzheads and tastemakers—performers and instrumentalists from vast corners of the world will gather.
Nubya Garcia will headline with her all star band, supported by Wayne Francis (United Vibrations, Ahnansé) who will kick off the night’s jam with Indian drummers, beat-boxers and Brazilian vocalists. Also supporting will be former beat-box world champion Bellatrix. Opening the night on decks is DJ and selector ZAKIA.
As the perfect appetiser before an evening of music, NTS host and writer Teju Adeleye will lead a discussion with some of the starring musicians. She will be exploring the artists’ relationships between traditional music from their native country, as well as finding out how they respond to global music phenomenons.
Ahead of the night, Guðrið, one of the Faroese musicians explains; “Being involved with On Mass has been such a rich and life-changing experience for me. I feel like there couldn’t be a better forum for me to step out of my comfort zone and really explore my capability of expressing myself in music.”
Sailesh from India tells Brainchild he is most excited about “mastering my skills and a chance to grow in the art form and share these techniques and experience with people who are in the same mindset as mine”.
